Start with EOIR, the Executive Office for Immigration Review, not USCIS. EOIR’s public case tools are the right place to look. This guide covers what to gather, how to search, and how to read the results.

If you’re checking on a family member’s case, have their court papers in front of you before you start.

Immigration Court Cases Are Tracked by EOIR, Not USCIS

Immigration court cases are tracked by EOIR, a Department of Justice agency. USCIS handles applications such as green cards and naturalization. EOIR includes the Board of Immigration Appeals and the Office of the Chief Immigration Judge (8 C.F.R. § 1003.0). A removal case under section 240 of the Act starts when a notice to appear is filed with the immigration court (8 C.F.R. § 1239.1).

A USCIS receipt number won’t bring up a court case. Search with the court identifiers instead.

If you haven’t read the notice to appear yet, read it first.

If a hearing date on your papers doesn't match what you see online, you don't have to sort it out alone; our team can talk through your case with you. The A-number, or Alien Registration Number, is the number printed on immigration papers. The notice to appear lists the person’s names, aliases, and registration number (8 C.F.R. § 1003.15).

Check the notice to appear, hearing notices, and other court papers for exact spelling. A missing part of a name, or a different word order, can return no result. Write the details down exactly as they appear.

If you’re checking for a family member, gather the same papers first. Don’t rely on memory for the A-number.

How Do I Check My Immigration Court Case Status Online or by Phone?

You can use EOIR’s public case information system online. You can also call EOIR’s automated case information line, which the EOIR website lists. The online system is run by the Department of Justice, so it is the government source for court case information.

Enter the details exactly as they appear on your court papers. If the first try returns no result, check the spelling and search again. Don’t assume something is wrong until you’ve checked the details.

USCIS has its own case status tools for applications. Know which agency you’re reaching before you search or call. Using the wrong system wastes time and can cause confusion.

Reading Your Immigration Court Case Status Results

Status results show what the court has recorded. They may show whether the case is active and any scheduled hearing. Compare every hearing date with your hearing notice, because the notice is the document you must follow. A mismatch is a reason to look closer, not a reason to assume the case is over.

If a decision has been entered, the rules matter. An immigration judge’s decision may be oral or written, and it must give reasons for the ruling (8 C.F.R. § 1240.12). A written decision is served on you and DHS counsel. Service by mail is complete upon mailing (8 C.F.R. § 1240.13).

If the judge orders removal, the judge must tell you about the decision and the consequences of not leaving under the order, including civil and criminal penalties, and, unless you waive appeal, give you Form EOIR-26, Notice of Appeal. If the immigration judge orders you removed, an appeal lies to the Board of Immigration Appeals, except that no appeal lies from an order of removal entered in absentia (§ 1240.15). The meaning of any entry depends on the facts of your case and where it stands.

How Long Updates Take and Why Status May Lag

Online records can lag behind events in court. The court updates its record when it processes filings, schedules hearings, and enters orders. There can be a gap before a change appears online. Check again after each court date or filing, and keep copies of every notice you receive.

The immigration court creates and controls the Record of Proceeding (8 C.F.R. § 1003.36). The Record of Proceeding is the court file that the immigration court creates and controls. Scheduling rules also help you read dates. A hearing can’t be set earlier than 10 days after service of the notice to appear, unless you ask in writing for an earlier date (8 U.S.C. § 1229). A judge may grant a continuance for good cause shown (8 C.F.R. § 1003.29), but a continuance cannot cause the adjudication of an asylum application to exceed 180 days in the absence of exceptional circumstances.

Address changes matter. If the address on your notice is missing or wrong, you must give the court written notice of your address and phone number within five days of service (8 C.F.R. § 1003.15). After any address change, file Form EOIR-33 with the court within five days. Missing these notices may lead to an in absentia hearing.

USCIS processing times follow a separate clock. A USCIS update won’t tell you when the court will act.

When a Status Check Raises Questions About Your Case

A missing hearing date, a date that conflicts with your papers, or an entry you don’t understand is a good reason to have a lawyer review the file.
